ABILITY AWARENESS PROGRAM This program encourages children to become more aware of the abilities of people with disabilities.
Annual Forums: We at SOCIL open our doors, eyes, ears and minds to our consumers on a daily basis, however every six months we will encourage ALL consumers and/or any interested people in the community to come to the SOCIL office for the semi-annual Consumer Forums. This is your opportunity to let us know what needs and/or wants you have. This is the consumer’s time to speak up and be heard.
Accessibility Project: SOCIL conducts assessments, evaluations and reports utilizing the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for businesses, government and agencies. SOCIL will provide technical assistance, explanation of requirement and recommended solutions to compliance issues.
Advocacy Training: SOCIL staff will provide information and/or support to train individuals in the proper steps of self advocacy, community advocacy and system advocacy.
Assistive Technology (AT): Staff assists consumers by providing information and referral regarding AT issues.
Buckeye Card: Any Ohio resident age 18-59, who has a total and permanent disability and is unable to work, is eligible for a card. It provides savings on prescriptions as well as purchases at local merchants. SOCIL has applications available and will guide you in its submission.
Computer Resource Center: Basic computer training will be provided by volunteers and/or SOCIL staff.
Employment Services: Job seekers with disabilities receive guidance on employment issues and assistance in identifying available services within the community to assist with employment or vocational interests.
EMPACT Empowering More Parents to Advocate for Children of Today receive information you need to advocate for your child.
Facilitate Transition from Nursing Home to Community: SOCIL staff will work with consumers who want to transfer from a nursing home or rehabilitation center and assist them in moving into the community with appropriate support services.
Four Foot Hoops Wheelchair Basketball Program: Do you have cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida or some other disability that affects your lower and/or upper extremities? Come try our adaptive wheelchair basketball program. This program is for individuals ages 5 and up who have disabilities that keep them out of traditional basketball programs. Everyone must play in a wheelchair and we use modified 4 foot basketball hoops, which allow easier shooting. Some sports chairs are provided, call 689-1494 for dates and times.
Housing: SOCIL staff will provide consumers with listings of affordable accessible housing, information on agencies that provide rental/financial education programs, referrals to legal agencies and accessible home modifications.
Independent Living Plans: SOCIL staff will work one-on-one with a consumer to develop goals for increasing independence.
Independent Living Skills (ILS): Staff can provide workshops, training classes or individual instruction for Independent Living and socialization skills.
Information and Referral: Information about disability issues and referral to other agencies that provide services to individuals with disabilities.
Library Audio-Visual & Texts: SOCIL provides through it’s consumer library, a variety of books, magazines, literature and videos regarding disability issues.
Peer Support Services: Through individual or a group effort, peer support is provided to individuals and their families who are dealing with disabilities that effect their daily lives.
Volunteer Opportunities: SOCIL is continually seeking volunteers who are committed to making a difference in people’s lives. Examples of assistance that volunteers can help with are: Peer support, computer trainings, mailings, ADA accessibility studies and much more. Voter Registration: Applications are available for voter registration or absentee ballots. Staff are available to answer questions on the voting process. Staff can also educate you on your rights regarding polling site accessibility.
What’s Next: The purpose of this program is to help families navigate the complex system of services for individuals with disabilities as they transition to community-based services and begin planning for independent living. Programs will be held in the spring and fall. Call SOCIL for information about the program topic and to register.
